High production costs and mediocre sales brought the company to the brink of bankruptcy. In 1954, in a last-ditch effort to survive, a merger was negotiated with the Studebaker Company, in South Bend, Indiana. In 1956, all production was moved from Detroit to South Bend, effectively ending the life of Kahn’s sprawling facility. The company that had introduced such now-standard innovations as the automatic transmission, air conditioning, and power windows, was gone.
