Several studies examine the duration of abuse as a factor. In a study of women who were sexually abused as children, Russell found that 73 percent of those women whose abuse lasted for more than five years considered the experience extremely or considerably traumatic, compared with 62 percent whose abuse lasted from one week to five years, and 46 percent who were abused only once (Russell 1986). On the other hand, Finkelhor found no relationship between the seriousness of the effects and the duration of the abuse (Finkelhor 1979).
