And we are all made in his likeness and image” (363). This proposition, which is consistent with Eduviges’s view of José Trigo as one who “could be two people at the same time, of whom one could drag the other along or simply kill off the goodness and prudence in him” (26), has surprising consequences for the symbolic projections of both Luciano and Manuel Angel. Contrary to normal expectations, Luciano, who, as we have just seen, displays some traits of Jesus Christ, is also cast in the mold of Lucifer, the Bringer of Light.

Luciano and Manuel Angel stand at the center of a network of narrative relationships that include their families and the local community of Nonoalco-Tlatelolco and stretch beyond the boundaries of Mexico City to encompass the nation as a whole. Among a plethora of secondary characters, the most important are madrecita Buenaventura and her husband, Todolosantos, of whom Luciano was “coincidentally both son and grandson” (137), and José Trigo—a fantasmal being whose story is tied up with that of Luciano and Manuel Angel and who represents an enigma to be elucidated in the course of the narrative.
